Organ-specific Nano ceria bioprocessing is revealed by analytical high-resolution electron microscopy.

Stefan Seidel

The techniques used to characterize the organ-specific bioprocessing of a relatively inert nanomaterial (Nano ceria) include high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), high angle annular dark field scanning TEM (HAADF-STEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping. After a prolonged in vivo exposure of 90 days, liver and spleen samples were obtained from rats that received a single intravenous infusion of Nano ceria. The organ-specific cellular and subcellular fate of Nano ceria following its uptake was clarified using these cutting-edge analytical electron microscopy techniques. The liver and spleen process Nano ceria differently when it comes to bioprocessing.
